In Wisconsin, it's not merely about benefits and pay.
It's about the workers' right to collectively bargain, raise money for political causes, and have a say at the table where the conditions of their employment are discussed. Republicans, or more precisely the corporations that have bought them, hate that. They just scored a major win with Citizens United (no regulation over money that they can receive from their corporate sponsors) and now they want to destroy the unions completely making it extremely hard for Dems to raise funds for elections.
Walker's (R Gov of WI) argument that the state in deficit is completely false, btw. WI has a 120 million dollar surplus. However, Walker promised a lot of money, sweetheart deals and tax-cuts to the corporations (Koch Industries) that paid for his election and now he has to pay it - effectively taking the 120 mil surplus and turning it into a deficit. So, it's his debt. Not ours.
