We recently switched to Sonic.net for DSL - even though we have to keep the phone line, we no longer have to have it from AT&T and it's cheaper. Granted, we had a lifeline phone service to begin with. If in your area you have FIOS, that might be a good solution - of all places, you can't get it in SF! But we're pretty happy with the DSL, especially since we stream and torrent a lot. And we have the T-Mobile family phone plan where you purchase a phone separately. My friend is touting their contract-less deals now, but we're not unhappy with our contract.
